Golden Rat Tail Cactus

Cleistocactus winteri

Stunning trailing cactus with golden-yellow spines covering long, finger-like stems. Perfect for hanging baskets where it can cascade dramatically.

About Golden Rat Tail Cactus

The golden rat tail cactus is a showstopper with its long, trailing stems densely covered in soft golden-yellow spines. Native to Bolivia, this cactus can produce stems that reach several feet in length, creating a dramatic cascading effect. Unlike many cacti, its spines are relatively soft and hair-like, giving the plant a fuzzy, golden glow—especially when backlit by sunlight.

High Light (4+ hrs direct sun)

Bright light is essential—at least 4-6 hours of direct or bright indirect sun daily. The golden spines become more vibrant with adequate light.

Ideal window: South or West-facing windows are best. South windows provide the most intense, longest direct sun exposure, while west windows offer strong afternoon light. This cactus thrives in spots other plants would find too sunny.

Note: Window direction recommendations are based on the Northern Hemisphere.

Tip

The golden color of the spines intensifies with more light. If your cactus looks pale or greenish, it needs a sunnier spot.

Low — Every 2-4 weeks

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings—typically every 2-3 weeks in the growing season (spring/summer) and monthly or less in winter. Like all cacti, this plant stores water in its stems and is far more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering.

Thrives in dry conditions. Average to low household humidity is ideal. Avoid humid locations like bathrooms.

Hot-Tolerant — 50-90°F

Comfortable at 50-90°F (10-32°C). Can tolerate cooler winter temperatures down to 40°F (4°C), which may help trigger blooming. Avoid frost.

Soft, mushy stems

Overwatering and rot. Reduce watering immediately and ensure the pot has good drainage. Let soil dry completely before watering again.

Pale or stretched growth

Insufficient light. Move to a brighter location with more direct sun.

Shriveled stems

Underwatering. While rare with cacti, if stems look wrinkled and deflated, give a thorough drink.

Brown, dry patches

Sunburn from sudden exposure to intense direct sun. Gradually acclimate to brighter conditions over 1-2 weeks.

Golden rat tail cactus is spectacular in hanging baskets or elevated planters where its stems can trail freely. The golden spines catch light beautifully and create a striking silhouette. Works well in bohemian, desert, or modern decor. Group with other trailing succulents for a living cascade.

Bottom Watering Compatibility

caution

Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly every 2-3 weeks in summer, less in winter.
