About Boston Fern
Boston ferns are timeless beauties that bring Victorian elegance to any space. Their arching, feathery fronds can span several feet, creating a lush, flowing display. They're more demanding than some houseplants, primarily needing consistent moisture and humidity.
Light
Prefers medium indirect light. Tolerates lower light but grows more slowly. Direct sun burns the delicate fronds. North-facing windows or filtered light from east windows are ideal.
Boston ferns drop leaves when stressed—this is normal. If your fern sheds occasionally, it's likely just adjusting. Consistent shedding indicates a care issue.
Water
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Never let it dry out completely. These ferns are excellent candidates for bottom watering or self-watering planters.
Humidity
High humidity is essential—50% or higher. Bathrooms and kitchens are ideal locations. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or mist frequently. Brown frond tips indicate dry air.
Temperature
Prefers cool to moderate temperatures: 60-75°F (15-24°C). Keep away from heating vents and drafts which dry them out.
Common Problems
Brown, crispy fronds
Low humidity or underwatering. Increase humidity and check soil moisture.
Yellow fronds
Overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure pot has drainage and reduce watering.
Leaf drop
Stress from environmental changes, low humidity, or inconsistent watering.
Styling Notes
Boston ferns are iconic in hanging baskets where their fronds can cascade freely. They also work on pedestals, high shelves, or as centerpieces. Perfect for porches, bathrooms, and humid spaces.
