Parlor Palm
Chamaedorea elegans
Elegant, slow-growing palm perfect for tabletops and low-light spaces. A Victorian favorite that adds tropical charm without demanding conditions.
About Parlor Palm
Native to the rainforests of Mexico and Guatemala, parlor palms have been popular since Victorian times when they graced parlors and sitting rooms (hence the name). They're among the easiest palms to grow indoors, tolerating lower light and drier conditions than most palms while adding tropical elegance.
Low-Medium Light
Thrives in low to medium indirect light. One of the few palms that tolerates low light conditions. Avoid direct sun which can scorch fronds.
Ideal window: North or East-facing windows work perfectly. North windows provide gentle indirect light, while east windows offer soft morning sun. Parlor palms are adaptable and handle lower light better than most palms.
Note: Window direction recommendations are based on the Northern Hemisphere.
Brown tips on palm fronds are common and often unavoidable. Trim them with scissors at a natural angle—it's purely cosmetic and doesn't harm the plant.
Moderate — Weekly
Keep soil lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch is dry. More tolerant of occasional underwatering than overwatering.
Appreciates moderate humidity but adapts to average conditions better than most palms. May develop brown tips in very dry air.
Standard — 60-80°F
Comfortable at 60-80°F (15-27°C). Keep away from cold drafts.
Brown frond tips
Common in dry air or with inconsistent watering. Trim for aesthetics.
Yellow fronds
Usually overwatering or age. Oldest fronds naturally yellow.
Spider mites
Palms can attract spider mites in dry conditions. Increase humidity and mist regularly.
Parlor palms add tropical elegance without overwhelming spaces. Perfect for tabletops, entryways, and offices. Group with other plants for a lush jungle effect.
Bottom Watering Compatibility
Parlor palms respond well to bottom watering. Keep soil lightly moist.
