About Parlor Palm
Parlor palms have been popular since Victorian times when they graced parlors and sitting rooms (hence the name). They're among the easiest palms to grow indoors, tolerating lower light and drier conditions than most palms while adding tropical elegance.
Light
Thrives in low to medium indirect light. One of the few palms that tolerates low light conditions. Avoid direct sun which can scorch fronds.
Brown tips on palm fronds are common and often unavoidable. Trim them with scissors at a natural angle—it's purely cosmetic and doesn't harm the plant.
Water
Keep soil lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch is dry. More tolerant of occasional underwatering than overwatering.
Humidity
Appreciates moderate humidity but adapts to average conditions better than most palms. May develop brown tips in very dry air.
Temperature
Comfortable at 60-80°F (15-27°C). Keep away from cold drafts.
Common Problems
Brown frond tips
Common in dry air or with inconsistent watering. Trim for aesthetics.
Yellow fronds
Usually overwatering or age. Oldest fronds naturally yellow.
Spider mites
Palms can attract spider mites in dry conditions. Increase humidity and mist regularly.
Styling Notes
Parlor palms add tropical elegance without overwhelming spaces. Perfect for tabletops, entryways, and offices. Group with other plants for a lush jungle effect.
