Heartleaf Philodendron

Philodendron hederaceum

Classic trailing plant with glossy, heart-shaped leaves. One of the most reliable houseplants, thriving even in less-than-ideal conditions.

About Heartleaf Philodendron

Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, the heartleaf philodendron has been a houseplant staple since the 1930s, and for good reason. Its elegant heart-shaped leaves trail gracefully while tolerating conditions that would stress most plants. It grows quickly, looks lush, and forgives the occasional missed watering.

Low-Medium Light

Thrives in medium indirect light but tolerates low light remarkably well. This makes it perfect for offices, bathrooms, and north-facing windows. Avoid direct sunlight which can burn the leaves.

Ideal window: North or East-facing windows are perfect. North windows provide consistent indirect light, while east windows offer gentle morning sun. Can also thrive in spots further from south or west windows.

Note: Window direction recommendations are based on the Northern Hemisphere.

Note

Heartleaf philodendron grows well under fluorescent office lighting, making it one of the best plants for workspaces.

Moderate — Weekly

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. These plants prefer consistent moisture but handle occasional drought. Yellow leaves often signal overwatering, while wilting and brown tips suggest underwatering.

Adapts to normal household humidity but appreciates higher humidity levels. Group with other plants or mist occasionally in very dry conditions.

Standard — 60-80°F

Comfortable in typical home temperatures of 60-80°F (15-27°C). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Yellow leaves

Most often overwatering. Ensure good drainage and let soil dry between waterings.

Leggy vines with few leaves

Insufficient light. Move to a brighter spot and prune leggy stems to encourage fuller growth.

Small, pale leaves

Usually needs more light or fertilizer during the growing season.

Heartleaf philodendron looks elegant trailing from high shelves, cascading from hanging baskets, or trained to climb a trellis. Its classic look complements virtually any decor style.

Bottom Watering Compatibility

excellent
